Just another site that's giving you hard to find music

A Place To Find Some Rarer Tunes (Mod, PowerPop, Punk, Ska) ripped from my vinyl collection. If it sounds good I'll post it. The idea being that now you know about them, you can seek them out! If anyone is unhappy about any of these posts please contact me & I will take them off.

Boys In Darkness - Back To France (1981)

b/w - A Man An Island

2 tracks of Post-punk (more New wave with prominent Synth) from this Scottish [Bathgate] band

Dave Gilhooly - (Voc)
Richard Wade - (Guitar)
Mike McCann - (Bass) - same guy that played with Hey Elastica! ?
Colin Laverty - (Drums)
Dave Milne - (Keyboards)

This 45 was released twice in '81 - 1st in October on the Bid for Freedom label [7" & 12" format - no p/s]. Then again in late November on the E.D.M. Champagne label [7" & 12" format - with p/s] - (Although their names on the label Of the EDM pressing are D Gillhooly (voc) G Wade (guitar) M McAneny (bass) C Laverty (drums) D Milne (keyboards)

Dave Gillhooly (An Art lecturer) wrote - "Back to France was written about a late night return to a Paris hotel. The Blackened tongue referred to, was after a night of drinking red wine and arguing about the impact of colour in Scottish Landscape painting."

Just speculating; but I suspect the 2nd pressing was to coincide with them scoring the support slot on the 2nd leg of the Stranglers La Folie Tour

  6. I was actually at the vocalist’s (Dave Gilhooly) audition with the band. I was there for some quite incidental reason. The force behind the band was Dave Milne (now sadly deceased), who (as a neighbour) I considered quite a good mate. I used to joke that the title of the track was ‘Get tae France’ , a contemporaneously popular euphemism for ‘get to f••k’. We, our bunch of pals, went to many local gigs to support them. This wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Dave’s girlfriend (I hope she doesn’t mind a mention) Mary Dunlop who was an absolute diamond when it came to lending support.
The Glenburn Hotel at Currie was a regular location on Sunday evenings. I had the chance to ‘roadie’ for them on that Stranglers-support tour but due to other commitments that role was taken up by another of our mates. I did roadie for them once at ‘The Venue’ in London, late ‘82,which was marred by the theft of equipment when the van was broken into. Their guitarist Graham Wade from Yorkshire, was pretty good and I’m surprised he’s not particularly well represented on this particular mix of the song. He went on to manage the Playhouse venue in Edinburgh and the other local venues run by the same company. The extremely talented bassist Mike (as can be heard on the track) was a dedicated member, as was Colin Laverty the drummer.
Should anyone wish further details of Dave Milne and the band and their previous ‘incarnations’, please get in touch. (linday2014@gmail.com).
